Hiking with dogs in Ottawa and Region...Where can I hike with my dog? What about in the winter? Are there off-leash parks nearby? Why can't I bring my dog to trail XYZ? Common questions and concerns as we saw a spike in two areas during the pandemic - an increase in dog owners and a significant increase in hikers and new hikers hitting the trails. And with good reason, there is overwhelming evidence that having "man's best friend" by our side positively impacts our mental and overall health. Plus, dogs are adorable. This article is to empower pet owners with awareness that promotes responsible recreation.

Spring is in the air! Can you feel it?! I can. A renewed sense of well-being and adventure. Many of us are like sprinters at the start line, just oh-so-eager to get on the trails. I hear ya!

We'll explore recommendations for boardwalks, gentle hikes with features, and mild elevation trails in Ottawa and region.

Ready for trails and stops offering lush and beautiful wildflowers in the region?! Trilliums (Ontario's provincial plant) start lining the forest floors in early May. Lilacs tend fill the air mid to late May, The carnivorous pitcher plants (Newfoundland's provincial plant) come to life in the spring. And last but not least, wild lady slipper orchids bloom gloriously in mid June.

There is little as beautiful and grounding as watching the sun rise over the horizon. Except perhaps, an incredible sunset? It's hard to choose. Why not enjoy both?! Let's chase the those views this year.

Winter isn't normally what you think of as a hiking season, but in Ontario it is one of the best times to get outside and on the trails! Just think, there are no bugs (huge bonus), less traffic, and some epic views. Another reason? It's a lot easier to get up for a 7am winter sunrise than it is a 5am summer one.

The log cabins at North Frontenac Lodge, three total, were built in the 1940s and it was originally a fly-in fishing destination. There is also a fourth larger cabin available. No worries about having to fly in to this location though, there's dirt road access, one that twists and turns following the hydro lines.

It’s also a great rest stop for thru hikers and cyclists with the nearby trails.
